Although we have other pictures of London here on the web site, Mike had never been there and we thought it would be a fun place to go for the Easter weekend. We were able to see and do a few things that Gabi did not do with her parents. Such as shopping at Harrods, seeing a show on the West End, touring the Cabinet War Rooms, visiting the Tower of London (Crown Jewels), attending Easter service at the Westminster Cathedral, going to Speaker's Corner, and checking out the Sherlock Holmes Museum.
Without going in to a ton of historical detail (which is easy to do in London), here is a few short details about some of what we were able to see: Harrods is the famous store of the Al-Fayed family, whose son Dodi was killed with Princess Diana. You can buy everything from gourmet food to fine jewelry and clothes all in the same store. We were able to see 'Ragtime' in the West End. This was an excellent production and we would highly recommend you see it if you get a chance. The Cabinet War Rooms were a fantastic journey back into the history of World War II. You can walk through the map, strategy and living quarters of Churchill and his staff. The war rooms also offer recorded broadcasts and interesting personal notes about Churchill, the entire experience is well worth it. The Tower of London is full of history and we can't do any of it justice in the space we have here. We would highly recommend the Beefeater (Yeoman Warder) tour for an inside look at the politics of the Kings and Queens of England. The Tower has been used as a palace, fortress, prison, place of execution, arsenal, royal mint, and jewel house. Westminster Cathedral is the home of the Catholic Church in England and was opened in 1903. Don't confuse this with Westminster Abbey where the Kings and Queens of England are coronated. We were able to attend Easter services celebrated by HE Cardnial Cormac Murphy-O'Connor.
We had a great time in London and it is a great place to visit. Bring lots of cash!
